Bakers Battle to Edge Close Game
By Jack Courtney
Bakers Progress After Cup Victory
Bakers made the trip to Old Brentwood for this Sunday's cup clash. The hosts had a mixture of huge players and a couple of nippy players so were going to make the game a huge challenge.
Bakers excreted the early pressure but in their excitement in attack left themselves exposed as the hosts cleared with a kick chase. This was converted and pegged Bakers back.
The boys responded well pressuring again from the restart. After winning the turn over Bakers put together a couple of phases for fly half Dylan to crash over the line to bring Bakers within two points.
The visitors responded well and Damian was able to take a great of load to give Bakers the lead. Robson was able to add the extras to give B's a 5 point lead.
At times the game was very scrappy and this benefitted the hosts as some of the 'speedsters' was able to find space in the chaos to put pressure on Bakers. The second try for Brentwood's was that of a fortunate one where a few penalties allowed the number 8 to touch down on the post protector and the extras were added.
The hosts were resurgent from the score and touched down twice more with 2 conversions to put them 28-12 up. Tom was close to bringing Bakers back in the game but was held up just short of the line. Bakers got back in touch when Harry picked up the offload to power over the line from a good flowing move.
Half time: OB's 28 M&B 17
Bakers started the second half very lively and pinned the hosts in their half for large spells and Ronnie was unlucky not to bring the score closer. However, a few moments later he was able to break around the outside to bring bakers within a score.
Bakers didn't hang around and 2 well battled tries from Miles and Dom with 2 conversions from Robson put Bakers back in control of the score card. Bakers were working hard on a shut out and were showing much more determination than last week. Lewis was unfortunate to have a try disallowed.
The hosts managed to crash over the line to bring the score closer but Ronnie's second score cancelled it out shortly after. Old Brentwood's tried to get back in the game but Bakers matched up well. The hosts did score a converted try, but it was Bakers who took the victory in an open and exciting contest.
